Do I need to get tested?
If you are or have ever been sexually active, it is important to get tested for Sexually Transmitted Infections. Any sexual activity puts you at risk, including vaginal, oral, or anal sex. Many Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)/Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) do not have symptoms so getting tested is important in order for you to get the treatment you need and to prevent you from spreading the infection to others. If you are a under the age of 25 and sexually active, your risk of infection is even greater and annual testing is recommended.
What testing is offered?
We currently offer screening for the following: HIV, Syphilis, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.
We also offer a Pap smear testing for women as part of a pelvic examination. In order to qualify for Pap smear testing you must be at least 21 years old, have no history of cervical cancer, and be a year or more since you last Pap smear was done. HPV testing may also be done as part of the PAP test, if medically appropriate.
How and when are the tests performed?
HIV and Syphilis require a blood sample, while Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are tested from a urine or vaginal sample. PAP tests are done as part of a pelvic exam and are by appointment only.
Testing is offered to women and men.
Please call (310) 268-8400 to schedule an appointment. All appointments are subject to availability.
What should I do to prepare?
Please note the following before scheduling your appointment (for urine tests only):
1. Please be sure you are not menstruating at the time of your visit.
2. Please do not urinate at least 1 hour prior to your visit.
What if my test is positive?
If you test positive for Chlamydia, our medical staff will call in a prescription at a local pharmacy. If your HIV, Syphilis or Gonorrhea test is positive, you will be referred to a local clinic that specializes in this type of treatment. If your PAP test is abnormal, a physician will discuss with you recommended treatment and refer you to a local clinic if appropriate.
How much do the tests cost?
Your first visit for STD/STI testing is free. However, there are limited STD testing appointments available each week and are subject to availability.
