Adoption has changed a great deal over the last few decades. There is an openness which tends to benefit the birth parents, the adoptive parents, and the adopted child. But, the choice to consider and explore adoption is still a challenge. There are many benefits and consequences to weigh. For a birth mom who chooses to place her child, it can mean the opportunity to finish school or continue with career and other life goals. However, there is also grieving and the process of letting go. None of this can be glossed over.
Adoption can mean choosing a good and loving family for your baby, as well as the opportunity to make a choice that respects your values. Exploring adoption gives you the opportunity to assess whether this choice would truly honor your core beliefs, not only for today, but for the rest of your life. Adoption may not be your choice, but you owe it to yourself, and your future, to become fully informed of the pros and cons of adoption, in addition to your other options.
At the WPC, we offer free and confidential lay counseling on all of your options regarding your prenancy. We can talk with you about the different types of adoption, offer local referrals, and give you the opportunity to ask questions and express your thoughts in a safe environment. We do not facilitate adoptions, but we can give you information so that you can make the best decision for your future. Additionally, we have birthmoms who can meet with you to share their story. They are often available to answer questions you have may have about what it was like for them to choose adoption. Ongoing support is available at the WPC regardless of what decision you make about your pregnancy.
